Barn owls have declined significantly in the UK due to agricultural intensification, but targeted conservation through nest box provision and habitat management has achieved real population gains.
Barn owls in areas without suitable nest sites are limited in their ability to breed successfully, reducing population fitness and resilience. Secondary poisoning from rodenticides causes a slow and distressing death as anticoagulants prevent blood clotting. Each individual owl that dies from rodenticide poisoning represents a preventable welfare failure. Nest box provision and rodenticide-free management are complementary welfare and conservation interventions.
