Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) is primarily a stress-related condition. Environmental modification and stress reduction prevent recurrence more effectively than any medical treatment.
FIC episodes cause significant pain and distress - affected cats strain painfully and repeatedly while producing little or no urine. The stress-pain cycle is self-reinforcing: the painful episodes increase anxiety, which triggers further episodes. For male cats, urethral obstruction is a welfare emergency requiring immediate veterinary intervention to prevent fatal uremia. Identifying and modifying stress triggers is the most effective long-term welfare intervention.
