Modern pig breeding programmes increasingly incorporate welfare traits alongside production metrics. The way breeding goals are designed determines whether welfare improves or is inadvertently compromised.
Breeding decisions made at the genetic level propagate through millions of commercial animals, making breeding programme design one of the highest-leverage welfare interventions in pig production. When welfare traits are absent from breeding goals, the genetic trajectory of the population inevitably compromises welfare as production traits are optimised. Including measurable welfare traits in selection indices can deliver sustained improvement in population-level welfare across generations.
