Cats often receive inadequate post-operative pain management because their subtle pain signs are missed. Evidence-based multimodal analgesia improves recovery and welfare.
Under-treated post-operative pain is a significant welfare failure. Cats experiencing uncontrolled pain after surgery cannot rest comfortably, eat normally, or groom adequately. Recovery is slower and more stressful. The historical perception that cats are 'stoic' about pain has been revised by better understanding of feline pain assessment - cats show pain through facial expressions and behavioural changes that trained observers can reliably score. Modern multimodal analgesia protocols significantly improve post-operative welfare.
