Commercial octopus aquaculture is becoming technically feasible, but the welfare challenges for these highly intelligent, solitary animals raise serious ethical questions.
Octopus farming presents some of the most difficult animal welfare challenges in aquaculture. These cephalopods have complex nervous systems, clear pain responses, and behavioral needs that appear incompatible with commercial density. Stress indicators include inking, blanching, and self-mutilation. Unlike fish, octopuses cannot be kept in groups without serious aggression. Welfare scientists have called for a moratorium on commercial octopus farming until meaningful welfare standards can be developed — and question whether such standards are achievable.
