Evidence-based information about farmed prawn harvesting: welfare at end of production for animal welfare improvement.
Prawns during harvesting experience dramatic changes in temperature, crowding, and handling that cause stress responses. Prolonged air exposure causes suffering. While the welfare capacity of prawns is debated, precautionary approaches to harvesting that minimise air exposure, crowding duration, and rough handling are consistent with both welfare principles and produce quality.
