Spot inspections provide valuable information but can miss temporal variation in welfare status. Pigs assessed during a welfare inspection may have better welfare than on other days, or the sample examined may not represent the whole population. Continuous monitoring approaches that use routine production data alongside targeted welfare indicators provide a more complete picture of welfare over time.
