Third-party aquaculture certification schemes vary widely in their welfare standards, and consumers face significant challenges in identifying which labels reflect genuine welfare improvements.
Aquaculture certification has grown rapidly but welfare content varies enormously. Many schemes focus primarily on environmental sustainability rather than fish or invertebrate welfare. Meaningful welfare certification should include species-appropriate stocking density limits, water quality parameters, slaughter method requirements, injury and disease monitoring, and behavioral welfare indicators. Consumers cannot currently rely on most aquaculture labels as welfare guarantees and should seek out schemes with transparent, independently audited welfare criteria.
