Welfare Considerations

Oil spill response involves profound welfare tradeoffs. For some species, the survival rate after release is too low to justify the handling stress. For others, rehabilitation is clearly worthwhile. The welfare calculus must be made species-by-species, informed by post-release survival data. Improving spill prevention is ultimately far more welfare-protective than even the best rescue response.
