Overview of 3Rs (replacement, reduction, refinement) progress in laboratory animal welfare in 2026.
Laboratory animal welfare in 2026 has benefited from sustained 3Rs investment, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements for alternatives assessment. Organoids, computer modelling, and human cell-based systems are reducing animal use in some research areas. However, neuroscience, complex disease, and behavioural research continue to require animal models. Progress requires both technology development and cultural change in research institutions.
