Laboratory rat welfare has benefited from growing recognition of their complex social and cognitive needs. Social housing is now standard in most research institutions, and environmental enrichment is increasingly required. Research on rat positive welfare indicators, including play and anticipatory behaviour, is advancing the field beyond simple absence of harm toward genuine positive welfare in research settings.
