Overview of the relationship between animal welfare advocacy and indigenous hunting and food traditions.
Engaging with indigenous food cultures and hunting traditions requires welfare advocates to adopt respectful, collaborative approaches that recognise cultural sovereignty and the complexity of human-animal relationships in different cultural contexts. Blanket condemnation of indigenous practices is not effective and ignores important distinctions between subsistence, cultural, and commercial activities. Collaborative approaches that build on existing cultural values of respect for animals offer more promise.
