Overview of global progress in banning mink farming and welfare implications of phase-out.
Farmed mink welfare is severely compromised by conditions that cannot meet their complex behavioural needs. Mink are semi-aquatic predators that develop stereotypies and welfare problems in cage farming systems. The COVID-19 mink outbreaks accelerated policy decisions in several countries. Phase-out programmes, while complex, represent a welfare-based policy achievement. Supporting farmers through transition while protecting mink welfare is the dual challenge of phase-out policy.
