Overview of heat stress welfare in sheep, particularly in warm and Mediterranean climates.
Sheep heat stress welfare is less severe than in pigs but remains significant, particularly during shearing transition periods when insulation is abruptly removed. Water access and shade are primary welfare interventions in warm climates. Shearing timing should consider both welfare and practical farm management. Climate change is extending heat stress risk to sheep farming regions historically less affected.
