Poultry Precision Welfare Monitoring: Commercial Applications

Overview of precision welfare monitoring technology for commercial poultry production.

Key Facts

Computer vision systems can detect gait abnormalities and behaviour changes in broiler flocks
Dust bathing and foraging behaviour monitoring enables welfare assessment at scale
Ammonia and air quality sensors provide continuous welfare-relevant environmental data
Individual bird identification is challenging in dense poultry flocks but advancing
Welfare data integration with certification requirements is an emerging development

Welfare Considerations

Poultry precision welfare monitoring faces unique challenges from flock-level assessment needs and high bird densities. Computer vision systems applied to flock behaviour are advancing, enabling detection of welfare-relevant changes in activity, distribution, and behaviour. Environmental monitoring provides continuous welfare data on air quality and temperature. Integration of welfare technology with certification auditing could transform verification from periodic inspection to continuous monitoring.
