Equine competition welfare involves a spectrum of concerns. At the severe end, catastrophic breakdown injuries in flat racing and cross-country eventing cause immediate suffering and death. Chronic overtraining injuries, gastric ulcers from stress, behavioral abnormalities from social isolation, and pain from poorly fitting tack represent ongoing welfare costs across disciplines.
