Overview of welfare in farmed goat production systems for dairy and meat.
Farmed goat welfare faces similar challenges to other livestock including painful procedures without adequate analgesia, kid welfare, and intensive housing limitations. Disbudding without anaesthesia remains common despite welfare evidence for the pain caused. Dairy goat kid disposal raises issues analogous to dairy cattle. Outdoor access and browsing behaviour are important natural behaviours that intensive systems restrict. Consumer demand for goat dairy and meat products should be accompanied by welfare standard expectations.
