Overview of reactive leash behaviour in dogs, welfare implications, and evidence-based management.
Dog leash reactivity welfare recognises that the behaviour often reflects underlying emotional states of fear or frustration that cause welfare compromise. The dog's behaviour causes welfare problems for the dog as well as management difficulties for owners. Positive reinforcement behaviour modification changes the emotional response rather than simply suppressing the behaviour. Prevention through appropriate socialisation to other dogs and stimuli during the critical period is more effective than treatment of established reactivity.
