Overview of individual fish identification approaches in aquaculture welfare monitoring.
Individual fish identification and tracking in aquaculture provides welfare monitoring data at a level not currently achievable in routine production. Acoustic telemetry and PIT tags enable research-level tracking. Computer vision approaches using natural or artificial markings are advancing. Individual tracking data reveals welfare-significant information about disease spread, feeding behaviour, and social interaction. Commercial systems are in development that could transform aquaculture welfare monitoring if deployed.
