Nuthatch Woodland Ecology and Welfare

The nuthatch is a distinctive woodland bird with remarkable tree-climbing abilities, dependent on mature deciduous woodland with veteran trees for nest sites.

Key Facts

Nuthatches are the only UK bird to routinely run head-first down tree trunks
They plaster mud around nest hole entrances to customise the size
Dependent on mature woodland with large-diameter trees for foraging and nesting
UK population around 220,000 breeding pairs, largely stable
Absent from Ireland and Scotland except recent range expansions

Welfare Considerations

Nuthatches face threats from loss of mature woodland and removal of veteran trees. Ancient trees with natural cavities are essential habitat. Sustainable woodland management that retains old trees is vital.

What You Can Do

Support organisations protecting ancient woodland like the Woodland Trust
Advocate for veteran tree retention in woodland management plans
Create wildlife-friendly gardens adjacent to woodland habitat
