Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Decline and Recovery

The lesser spotted woodpecker is the UK's smallest woodpecker and one of its most rapidly declining birds, having lost over 80% of its population since the 1970s.

Key Facts

The lesser spotted woodpecker is sparrow-sized - far smaller than the great spotted
Population declined from around 30,000 pairs in 1970 to fewer than 2,000 today
Causes of decline include loss of mature woodland edge and scrubby habitat
Nest in dead or dying wood, excavating cavities in soft timber
Diet includes wood-boring beetles, aphids and spiders in tree canopy

Welfare Considerations

Lesser spotted woodpeckers are critically threatened. Loss of traditional orchards, riverside willows, and woodland edge habitat with standing deadwood has devastated populations. Targeted habitat restoration is urgently needed.

What You Can Do

Support conservation projects targeting lesser spotted woodpecker habitat
Campaign for traditional orchard restoration and riverside willow management
Report sightings to county bird recorders to help map remaining populations
