The chough is a rare and charismatic corvid found on coastal cliffs and upland areas, once widespread but now restricted to western fringes of the UK due to habitat loss.
Choughs require specific habitat conditions with short grass maintained by traditional extensive grazing. Loss of cliff-top grazing to scrub or improvement has reduced habitat quality. Supporting agri-environment payments to upland farmers helps maintain chough habitat.
