The wren is the UK's most numerous bird species but highly vulnerable to cold winters, with populations crashing after severe frosts and recovering through high reproductive rates.
Wrens suffer severe mortality during cold winters when invertebrate prey becomes inaccessible under frozen ground. Supplementary feeding is of limited direct benefit as they rarely come to feeders. Dense vegetation cover helps maintain roost temperature.
