Siskins and lesser redpolls are small finches associated with birch and alder woodland in winter, increasingly visiting garden feeders, with distinctive social feeding behaviour.
Siskin populations are largely stable, but lesser redpoll has declined significantly, possibly linked to forest management changes reducing young birch and willow habitat. Providing nyjer seed in garden feeders benefits both species through winter.
