Grey Wagtail Upland Stream Ecology

The grey wagtail is a colourful bird of fast-flowing streams and rivers, with distinctive long tail-wagging and brilliant yellow underparts, dependent on clean water and invertebrates.

Key Facts

Grey wagtail has bright yellow underparts and grey back, contrary to its confusing name
Dependent on fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams with adjacent bare rock or mud
UK population around 38,000 breeding pairs, with significant fluctuations after cold winters
Winters more widely along rivers and in coastal areas including towns
Feeds on aquatic invertebrates including mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies

Welfare Considerations

Grey wagtail welfare depends on clean, well-oxygenated rivers with healthy invertebrate communities. Water quality improvement, particularly reducing agricultural run-off and sewage discharge, directly benefits grey wagtails and their prey.

What You Can Do

Support river catchment restoration projects that improve water quality for wagtails
Report sewage pollution to the Environment Agency when you observe it
Join river monitoring schemes to track aquatic invertebrate and wagtail populations
