Pied Wagtail Urban Adaptability and Roosts

The pied wagtail is one of the UK's most familiar birds, equally at home in city centres as in farmyards, and famous for communal winter roosts in warm urban locations.

Key Facts

Pied wagtails roost communally in thousands in city trees and supermarket car parks in winter
UK population around 470,000 breeding pairs, relatively stable
Wagtails bob their tails constantly - a behaviour whose function is debated by scientists
White-black plumage of males contrasts with grever female colouration
Nest in crevices in walls, bridges and farm buildings

Welfare Considerations

Pied wagtails are generally secure but their urban winter roosts can be disrupted by development or tree management. These roosts use urban warmth as a thermal advantage. Respecting roost trees during winter is important for welfare.

What You Can Do

Provide nest boxes for wagtails on outbuildings in farmyards
