Dipper River Bird and Water Quality Indicator

The dipper is the only truly aquatic songbird in the UK, walking underwater along stony stream beds to forage for invertebrates, and an excellent indicator of river health.

Key Facts

Dippers can walk underwater against the current using their wings for stabilisation
UK population around 19,000 breeding pairs, stable in clean upland rivers
White bib and dark brown body distinctive - bobs continuously on riverside rocks
Nest in domed structures on rock faces, bridges and behind waterfalls
One of the first birds to breed in spring - eggs laid from January in some areas

Welfare Considerations

Dipper welfare directly reflects river water quality. They are sensitive indicators of acidification, agricultural pollution, and invertebrate community health. Recovery of dipper populations in areas previously affected by acid rain shows the value of environmental protection.

What You Can Do

Support water quality improvement schemes in upland river catchments
Advocate for stronger regulation of agricultural run-off and sewage treatment
Join river health monitoring schemes that include dipper surveying
