The dunlin is the most numerous wader on UK estuaries in winter, forming spectacular murmurating flocks of tens of thousands, and also breeds on upland moorland.
Dunlin breeding declines relate to moorland drainage and agricultural improvement reducing nest habitat quality. Wintering estuarine populations depend on intact tidal flats. Disturbance at roosting sites is a welfare concern for large concentrations.
