The turnstone is a stocky, short-billed wader famous for turning over seaweed and stones to find invertebrates, found on rocky shores and harbour walls throughout the UK coast in winter.
Turnstones are relatively secure but depend on undisturbed rocky and mixed shore habitats. Coastal development that removes natural seaweed and rocky foreshore reduces foraging habitat. Human feeding creates dependency and attracts birds to dangerous areas.
