The jack snipe is a secretive winter visitor from northern breeding grounds that bobs rhythmically when feeding, the smallest snipe species and extremely difficult to see.
Jack snipe are largely overlooked due to their extreme cryptic behaviour. They depend on boggy wetland habitat in winter. As these habitats are drained for agriculture, jack snipe lose critical winter habitat. Maintaining wet, rushy ground in farmland benefits them.
