The fulmar is an oceanic seabird that colonised Britain from Iceland in the 19th century and has the highest rate of plastic ingestion of any European seabird, making it a key indicator of ocean plastic pollution.
Fulmar plastic ingestion is an environmental crisis. The North Sea Plastic Reference Unit uses fulmars as standard indicators of marine plastic pollution. Reduction in plastic ingestion requires fundamental change in plastic production and waste management.
