The osprey became extinct as a UK breeding bird in 1916 but returned naturally to Scotland in 1954 and has subsequently been reintroduced to England and Wales, one of the great conservation stories.
Osprey recovery is a template for ambitious reintroduction conservation. Continued vigilance against illegal persecution is needed. Climate change affecting fish availability at breeding sites is an emerging concern. Nest site protection from recreational disturbance is essential.
