The marsh harrier went extinct as a UK breeder and returned through one nest in Norfolk in 1927, gradually recovering with wetland restoration and protection to become relatively common.
Marsh harrier recovery is linked directly to reed bed restoration and legal protection. RSPB reserves like Minsmere and Titchwell provide key breeding habitat. Persecution on some estates still occurs. Expanding into drier scrub habitats at some sites.
