The goshawk returned as a breeding bird through escaped falconry birds in the 1960s and has established populations in major forests, though it remains heavily persecuted in some areas.
Goshawk is illegally killed at high rates in some forest and moorland estates. Persecution prevents the population reaching its potential in suitable habitat. Display flights in late winter are the best opportunity to detect goshawks - they should not be disturbed.
