Animal agriculture is responsible for significant proportions of global greenhouse gas emissions, land use, water consumption and pollution, with welfare and environmental impacts often correlated.
The correlation between high welfare and lower environmental impact is not universal - extensive systems may have better welfare but higher greenhouse gas emissions per kg. This creates genuine complexity in policy design. However, reducing overall animal product consumption improves both welfare and environment.
