Sow Welfare and Gestation Crate Phase-Out

The transition away from individual gestation crates for pregnant sows to group housing represents one of the most significant pig welfare improvements, with implementation continuing globally.

Key Facts

EU gestation crate restrictions from 2013 required group housing except in specific periods
UK ban on close confinement of dry sows has been in place since 1999
US cage-free sow commitments cover a growing proportion of market
Group housing welfare depends on space allowance, group stability, and feeding system
Farrowing crates remain in widespread use despite growing welfare pressure to phase out

Welfare Considerations

Sow welfare has improved substantially where gestation crate bans are implemented. However, farrowing crates present ongoing welfare concerns during lactation. Research into farrowing pen designs that protect piglets without fully restricting sow movement is advancing.

What You Can Do

Support organisations advocating for farrowing crate phase-out timelines
Choose pork from farms using free farrowing systems where available
Engage with retailers and food companies on their sow welfare commitments
