Ducks are highly motivated to access water for bathing and foraging, with deprivation of water access in intensive production causing significant welfare problems and behavioural frustration.
Duck welfare in commercial production is frequently poor, particularly regarding water access. As waterfowl, ducks have strong motivations to bathe and forage in water that cannot be adequately met with nipple drinkers alone. Consumer demand for higher welfare duck products can drive improvement.
