Tilapia is one of the world's most farmed fish species, produced mainly in tropical developing countries with minimal welfare oversight and significant welfare challenges from crowding and disease.
Tilapia welfare receives little attention despite the enormous scale of production. Research on welfare indicators, stocking density standards, and disease management protocols is needed. Consumer demand for welfare-certified tilapia could drive improvement in this important species.
