Small-scale and mobile slaughter facilities offer welfare advantages over large industrial plants through reduced transport and more individual attention, but face regulatory and economic challenges.
Small and mobile abattoir welfare advantages are significant. Eliminating live transport is the single most impactful welfare improvement available in many supply chains. Animals slaughtered on farm avoid the cumulative stress of loading, transport, unloading, and unfamiliar lairage. Small facilities allow individual handling attention that is impossible in high-throughput industrial plants. However, regulatory requirements designed for industrial-scale operations have driven many small abattoirs to close, concentrating slaughter in large distant facilities and increasing transport distances. Regulatory reform to enable viable small and mobile abattoir operations is a direct welfare policy intervention.
