Internal parasites, particularly Haemonchus contortus and other gastrointestinal nematodes, cause significant welfare suffering in sheep worldwide, with growing anthelmintic resistance creating new management challenges.
Sheep parasite welfare requires a whole-flock management approach that balances treatment of affected individuals with resistance management. Continuing to use blanket treatments as resistance increases will ultimately leave sheep without effective treatment options. Strategic treatment approaches protect long-term welfare.
