Domestic Cat Predation and Wildlife Welfare

Domestic cats kill millions of birds and mammals in the UK annually, making responsible cat ownership including bells, curfews, and outdoor access management important for wildlife welfare.

Key Facts

UK domestic cats are estimated to kill 55 million birds and 275 million mammals annually
Young birds leaving nests in spring and summer are most vulnerable to cat predation
Bells on cat collars reduce predation success by around 40%
Keeping cats indoors particularly at dawn and dusk reduces wildlife predation
Most cat predation occurs within 100m of the owner's property

Welfare Considerations

Cat predation welfare impacts are real and significant at both individual and population levels. Responsible cat ownership that reduces predation opportunity is an animal welfare action for wildlife. This is a sensitive issue requiring constructive rather than confrontational engagement with cat owners.

What You Can Do

Fit your cat with a coloured quick-release collar and bell to reduce predation
Keep cats indoors at dawn and dusk when most wildlife activity occurs
Create cat-proof garden areas that allow you to garden for wildlife safely
