Carp is the world's most farmed fish species, produced in extensive pond systems across Asia and Central Europe, with welfare challenges from crowding, oxygen depletion, and traditional harvesting methods.
Farmed carp welfare in traditional systems varies enormously. Extensive pond systems at appropriate densities may provide relatively good welfare. Intensive polyculture at high densities creates chronic oxygen and crowding stress. Harvest and live transport welfare deserves particular attention.
