European seabass is a major Mediterranean aquaculture species facing welfare challenges from crowding, disease, and pre-harvest handling, with welfare science less developed than northern European salmon.
Seabass welfare deserves attention proportional to its production scale. Mediterranean aquaculture has traditionally focused on yield and survival with limited welfare science. Applying welfare assessment frameworks developed for salmon to seabass production would identify priority issues.
