Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) affects the majority of performance horses and many leisure horses, with management and feeding practices being key prevention factors.
Equine gastric ulcer welfare requires fundamental management changes including ad libitum forage access, reduced stabling time, and minimised transportation and training stress. Treatment without management change results in recurrence. The prevalence of EGUS in performance horses reflects welfare compromise in pursuit of competition success.
