Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and its associated risk of laminitis cause significant welfare suffering in overweight horses and ponies, requiring dietary management and exercise.
EMS and laminitis welfare requires strict dietary management that is often resisted by owners who anthropomorphise horses' enjoyment of grazing. The welfare cost of laminitis is severe and long-term. Preventive management is far better for welfare than treating repeated laminitis episodes.
