Animal Welfare and Climate Justice

Climate change disproportionately affects animals in low-income countries and wild species with limited adaptive capacity, creating connections between climate justice for humans and welfare justice for animals.

Key Facts

Small-scale livestock farmers in the global south are most vulnerable to climate-driven livestock welfare impacts
Wild species in megadiverse developing countries face habitat loss from climate and development simultaneously
Indigenous communities dependent on wildlife face welfare and livelihood losses from climate change
Climate finance should address animal welfare as part of equitable climate adaptation
One Health frameworks connect climate, animal welfare, and human wellbeing in integrated responses

Welfare Considerations

Climate justice and animal welfare justice are interconnected. Climate change most severely affects the most vulnerable animals and the humans most dependent on animal resources. Equitable climate adaptation must include animal welfare as a component of just outcomes.
