Goldeneyes are winter visitors from Scandinavia to UK lakes and coasts, with a small breeding population in Scotland requiring nest box support.
Goldeneye welfare in winter depends on clean water with abundant benthic invertebrates. Water pollution reducing invertebrate prey forces birds to work harder for lower returns, reducing condition during the critical wintering period. Nest box provision has enabled Scottish breeding and directly supports individual welfare.
