Polecats have expanded from a Welsh stronghold to recolonise much of England, with welfare implications from road casualties and hybridisation with ferrets.
Polecat welfare during range expansion is affected primarily by road mortality. The expanding population represents a welfare success story - more individuals surviving and reproducing in more habitats. Supporting the continuation of this recovery requires road safety improvements and monitoring of expanding populations.
