Apartment dog welfare is achievable with appropriate management but requires more deliberate investment than house-with-garden keeping. Dogs in apartments that receive sufficient daily exercise, mental stimulation, social interaction, and outdoor sensory experiences can have excellent welfare. Dogs inadequately exercised in apartments develop behavioral problems and health issues. Breed selection is critical — brachycephalic breeds already struggle with thermoregulation and respiratory function, which is compounded by restricted exercise. High-energy working breeds require exercise levels that most apartment dwellers cannot realistically provide. Honest assessment of lifestyle capacity before acquiring a dog is itself a welfare act.
