Wild Shoveler Duck Welfare

Shovelers are distinctive ducks whose filter-feeding welfare depends on productive shallow water habitats with abundant invertebrates.

Key Facts

Shovelers filter water through their distinctive spatula-shaped bills for invertebrates and plant matter
They prefer shallow, productive water bodies with abundant small invertebrates
UK shoveler breeding population is around 1,500 pairs with winter numbers increasing from migrants
Disturbance on shallow wetlands forces repeated flight from productive feeding areas
Scrape management at RSPB reserves provides optimal shoveler feeding habitat

Welfare Considerations

Shoveler welfare depends on shallow, productive water with abundant filter-feeding invertebrates. Disturbance displaces birds from productive feeding areas, reducing food intake during critical periods. Protected wetlands with appropriate water management and minimal disturbance support individual shoveler welfare through breeding and wintering seasons.

What You Can Do

Support RSPB and wetland trust reserves managing shallow water habitats for shovelers
Advocate for minimal disturbance at protected wetland sites
Contribute to waterbird monitoring recording shoveler population trends
